"How to build self confidence?" answered by Swami Vivekananda

How to build Self-Confidence:

"What makes you weep, my friend? In you is all power. Summon up
your all-powerful nature mighty one and this whole universe will lie at
your feet. It is the Self alone that predominates and not matter."
Swami Vivekananda.
Though the potential strength is hidden within us, we are not able to
utilise it. Right attitude, positive thinking, and firm faith alone can
help us to manifest this hidden strength within. How do great people
achieve success in life? They cultivate certain qualities in order to
awaken the hidden confidence within themselves. Why not we also
give a try if we wish to be great and successful in life?
The qualities needed to be cultivated to build self-confidence are

1) Conviction
2) Hard Work
3) Will-Power
4) Self-respect
5) Long preparation
6) Communication
7) Commitment
8) Discrimination
9) Definite Goal
10) Love
11) Concentration
12) Strength

1) CONVICTION:
The very first step in climbing the ladder of self-confidence is firm
conviction about one's own ability. People are afraid of accepting
challenges and responsibilities because they doubt their capacity to
perform well; they underestimate themselves and lose wonderful
opportunities in life. Such doubting Thomases will never be able to say
with confidence that they can do anything and everything. So, never
doubt your inner strength. You may not be aware at present, but
believe that infinite power is lodged within you and will come out with
all its glory when you sincerely call upon it by way of positive attitude.
Swami Vivekananda said, "Never mind failures, they are quite natural,
they are the beauty of life, these failures. What would life be
without them? I never heard a cow tell a lie, but it is only a cow-never
a man. So never mind these failures, these little backsliding; hold on
to the ideal a thousand times and if you fail a thousand times make
the attempt once more."
How true it is! Thomas Alva Edison, one of the greatest scientists,
who made a series of inventions, had great conviction in his capacity.
He had made over 1000 experiments before he succeeded in inventing
the electric bulb. Though he was born in a poor American family and
was dull in his studies, nothing could obstruct his path or prevent him
from great achievements because of his firm faith in his inner
strength.
"Great convictions are the mothers of great deeds."
Swami Vivekananda.

2) Hard Work:
Nothing great can come unless we work for it. Dreams can never
become a reality without hard work. "Fortune approaches him who is
industrious. It is the weak-minded who says 'fate gives’. No acts are
done by mere desires; they are done only by diligence. The deer
doesn't enter the mouth of a sleeping lion. Men obtain the desired
fruit by speak of destiny only. Neither the lazy nor those who depend
solely on destiny fulfill their objective. Therefore, one should persist
in self-effort by all means." These are the words of scriptures.
"Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent
perspiration," says Thomas Alva Edison. There are many stories of
success. Among them was a world renowned speaker, Demosthenes.
How could he achieve that? He had a strong desire to become a
powerful speaker. It was not an easy task for him. He had a stammer,
added to that he was not able to speak long sentences at a stretch
due to stage fear, a feeble voice and many such difficulties. But he
could succeed only through hard work. As per the doctor's advice he
placed beads of flint on his tongue and tried to utter words clearly
and loudly. He would stand before the sea and deliver speeches in a
loud voice. He spent almost 15 hours a day studying books of various
interests and became a reservoir of knowledge. To perfect his
manners and gestures, he would stand before a life-size mirror and
deliver his speeches, bolting the room from inside. Hard-work and
sincere effort ultimately resulted in success, and he became a
powerful and effective public speaker. Let us have a high dream and
work hard to manifest that hidden power within. By constant efforts
success is bound to come.
"To succeed, you must have tremendous perseverance, tremendous
will.’ I will drink the ocean, 'says the persevering soul,' at my will
mountains will crumble up.' Have that sort of energy, that sort of will,
work hard and you will reach the goal."
Swami Vivekananda.

3) Will-Power:
We are experts in taking vows and breaking them within no time. It is
easy to take vows but difficult to keep them up. We need the will of
Bhisma, who took a vow of life-long celibacy and practised it
diligently. Weak minds always search for excuses. The mind is fickle
and restless by nature, always ready to compromise and vacillate.
Those who possess a strong will and are determined to achieve great
things never listen to their minds. They make their minds work for
them to achieve higher things in life.
King Vishvamitra was arrogant and created problems for sage
Vashistha; but when he was humiliated by Vashistha, realising the
strength of spiritual knowledge, he decided to become a brahmarshi.
He was caught in the web of lust when Menaka tempted him into
indulgence. He had to overcome all the impediments, such as anger,
hatred, jealousy, pride, envy, delusion for the attainment of that
state. He could succeed because of his tremendous will-power. He was
never disheartened by failure. His determination and will power
helped him to awaken confidence which in turn led him to success.
"You must not say that you are weak. How do you know what
possibilities lie behind that degradation on the surface? You know but
little of that which is within you. For behind you is the ocean of
infinite power and blessedness."
Swami Vivekananda.

4) Self-Respect:
It is a well-known fact that men of hard work, knowledge, wisdom and
perfection are always honoured and respected everywhere, whereas
the ignorant, inefficient, lazy and dull people always face humiliation
and insult. There are people who, in spite of being humiliated,
insulted, warned several times, issued memos, scolded for their
blunders and even punished, never try to improve themselves. They
are people with a thick skin. They suffer from all kinds of physical
and mental tortures but don't want to change their attitude due to
lack of self-confidence. But sensitive people consider humiliation
worse than death and always try to improve in order to protect their
honour and self-respect. Love for dignity and honour helps them to
manifest hidden confidence within themselves and they rise to the
occasion, and prove their mettle by accepting challenges in life.
The great poet Kalidasa was an illiterate and a dullard. Some pundits,
who had been defeated in arguments by a highly intelligent princess
Vidyottama, got her married to Kalidasa in a deceitful manner out of
jealousy. When the truth came out she felt greatly disturbed and
admonished Kalidasa for his ignorance. His honour was at stake. He
felt deeply hurt and humiliated. He took it as a challenge and decided
to become a learned man. This feeling of self-respect ignited his
confidence. He left home and returned only after he had become a
man of profound learning.

5) Long Preparation:
It's not enough to manage things, but it is important to manage them
well. Great things happen not out of magic or miracles but out of
systematic preparation. Those who do not prepare well and try to
manage things haphazardly always meet with embarrassment and
utter failure. Most of the people keep on thinking about goals but do
not pay attention to the minute details which will help them to
achieve it. We all know that on 11th September 1893 Vivekananda
became a world famous figure when he addressed the parliament of
religions in Chicago. But we forget that success didn’t come even to
the great Swamiji overnight. Preparation started from the day he
came into contact with his Master, Sri Ramakrishna, at the age of
17.Sri Ramakrishna knew that his disciple Narendranath was going to
become a world teacher, and he moulded his life accordingly. Training
of the guru, first-hand knowledge of the people during his wandering
days, deep study of scriptures and different branches of knowledge,
his love and compassion for the entire mankind, spiritual discipline and
realisation of the ultimate reality were the factors behind hi success.
Without proper preparation no person can be confident of success.
"Pay as much attention to means as to the end."
Swami Vivekananda

6) Communication:
Many have achieved success only through the power of perfect
communication. There are people who can be compared with a huge
reservoir of knowledge and information, but not always effective and
inspiring due to lack of the communicative ability .If you can speak
even a few words with confidence that will impress people and if you
can impress people by your effective communication, it will boost your
confidence. Many people talk, some are able to express, but only a
few can convey their ideas in an effective manner. Conquering people
through arguments may give you confidence but will never lead to
success. Convincing people through loving, affectionate, polite and
pleasant language not only gives you confidence but leads to success.
You may not be highly qualified or scholars, still you find a place in
the hearts of many. The power of your magic words will keep the
listeners spell-bound.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister of Independent
India, had a herculean task before him. At that time India was
divided into 554 states ruled by different kings and nawabs. 'Divide
and rule' was the policy of the British Government. Patel was against
it and wanted to unite India. To convince 554 kings and to make them
surrender was not an easy task. He was confident of his ability to
convince them about the great cause. He could successfully
accomplish that because of his effective communication. Except one
or two, all were convinced about his views and surrendered their
states to make India a great united power.
"It is only a few that understand the language of the brain, but
everyone understands the language that comes from the heart."
Swami Vivekananda.

7) Commitment:
Commitment and confidence always go together. The moment we
forget our commitment to a particular cause, we lose faith in
ourselves and try to justify our weaknesses. How many people
remember that they are the citizens of free India and are committed
to serve the cause of the nation? Very few indeed. We can count
them on the tips of our fingers. Mahatma Gandhi could have settled
down in South Africa, but his commitment to his country forced him
to return. Though the people did not believe him in the beginning, he
was confident that he could win freedom for India through the power
of non-violence.
Even when he was a student and wanted to go to London for higher
studies, mother Putali Bai was not wholeheartedly willing to send him
there fearing that Mohandas may not be able to resist temptation in
a foreign land, and spoil his life. She wanted him to promise that he
would never touch wine, meat and consequently associate with women
during his stay there. Without a moment's hesitation, Mohandas
agreed to her conditions. It was not an easy task for him. Many times
temptations came, but his commitment to his mother saved him from
all dangers and gave him tremendous confidence to overcome all
difficulties in his path.
"Let the sages blame or let them praise; let the goddess of fortune
come or let her go wherever she likes; let death come today, or let it
come in hundreds of years; he indeed is the steady man who doesn’t
move one inch from the way of truth."
Bhartrihari.

8) Discrimination:
Sometimes even the so-called learned scholars lose confidence when
they fail to discriminate between the real and the unreal, the right
and the wrong, vice and virtue due to lack of discrimination.
Knowledge alone can make us free from all types of fears. Fear is the
greatest enemy of man. People tell lies when they are afraid of
punishment. A little sickness makes them depressed due to fear of
death. They try to run away from the problems of life when are
afraid of failure. Arjuna, a great warrior and hero of the
Mahabharata war, went to the battlefield with the intention to fight.
But at the crucial moment has was overpowered by grief and fear and
lost confidence, sat down, throwing away his bow, depressed and
despondent and refused to totally confused. Sri Krishna restored
that knowledge again and made it clear to him that the soul is
immortal and eternal whereas the body is mortal and ephemeral.
There is no birth or death for the soul. Therefore, there was no need
for him to be despondent. Ignorance of his real nature was the cause
of depression. When Sri Krishna dispelled it in a trice by granting
himself-knowledge, he gets back his lost confidence and became
victorious.
"The earth is enjoyed by heroes-this is the unfailing truth. Be a hero.
Always say,'I have no fear. 'Tell this to everybody-'Have no fear'.
Fear is death, fear is sin, fear is hell, fear is unrighteousness, fear is
wrong life. All the negative thoughts and ideas that are in this world
have proceeded from this evil spirit of fear."
Swami Vivekananda.

9) Definite Goal:
Many youngsters are not very clear about their goal in life. We can't
begin our journey unless we are clear about our destination. We
cannot proceed even a step unless we decide where we want to go. A
clear-cut goal and a one-pointed concentration alone help us to
manifest tremendous confidence.
We want to do many things simultaneously. Without singular devotion
to the ideal, no great things can be achieved. Kalpana Chawla, born in a
small town in Haryana, became the first Indian woman to travel in
space only because she had fixed her goal when she was a mere child.
Her biographer writes, "Kalpana would lie on her back and look at the
glittering stars in the skies during summer nights. Presumably, this
was what ignited her dream to journey into space. "She set her goal
and never deviated from it though her advisers, parents and even the
college principal tried to dissuade her from her choice of aeronautical
engineering and suggested to her that she go for more popular fields
like mechanical or electrical engineering. But the young Kalpana
refused to be convinced and finally achieved her goal overcoming all
the obstacles in her way. Her one-pointed devotion to goal gave her
the required confidence to succeed in life.
"Take up one idea, make that one idea your life; think of it, dream of
it, live on that idea. Let the full of that idea, and just leave every
other idea alone. This is the way to success."
Swami Vivekananda.

10) Love:
Love is that magic word which works like a tonic to manifest instant
confidence even in a moment. Love makes impossible things possible.
Abraham Lincoln, the greatest president of the United States got
that confidence and courage to fight for the abolition of slavery
through love. It was his unselfish love for mankind which promoted
him to act. His loving heart could witness the sufferings of human
beings who were treated worse than animals.
A young Irish woman, Miss Margaret Noble, inspired by the speeches
of Swami Vivekananda in London, decided to come to India and help
Swamiji in his mission of upliftment of Indian women. What was that
force which made her renounce everything and follow Vivekananda to
India? It was her love for India. Swami Vivekananda could instil that
love in her heart. This love in her heart for the masses and the
women of India gave her great confidence to overcome all obstacles
in her way. She served India by starting a school for girls in Kolkata
and also took active part in India's freedom movements.
"Love opens the most impossible gates; love is the gate to all the
secrets of the universe. Every step that has been really gained in the
world has been gained by love."
Swami Vivekananda.

11) Concentration:
God has given a unique instrument called the 'mind' to all living beings
including animals. But He bestowed his special grace only on human
beings in the form of freedom. Animals are controlled by nature;
human beings are capable of conquering nature. This conquest is
possible only through the power of concentration. Swami Vivekananda
said,” Herein is the difference between man and animals- man has the
greater power of concentration. The difference in their power of
concentration also constitutes the difference between man and man.
Compare the lowest with the highest man. The difference is in the
degree of concentration. This is the only difference."
Concentration leads to perfection, perfection to confidence,
confidence to success and success finally leads to happiness. The
concentrated mind is like a perfect instrument for achieving success
in every walk of life. Creativity, talents, originality, scientific
discoveries and inventions, fine arts and even spiritual truths
discovered by the sages are the product of a concentrated mind.
Especially for students and youth concentration is a must. It is
impossible to acquire knowledge and working skills without adequate
concentration. A restless mind leads to confusion, frustration,
failures and various disasters.
How could Swami Vivekananda climb the pinnacle of success? Through
the power of concentration. In his own words,” Just two or three
days before the entrance examination, I found that I hardly knew
anything of geometry, so I began to study the subject, keeping awake
the whole night and in twenty-four hours I mastered the four books
on geometry."
Because of this power of concentration Swami Vivekananda could
master many subjects and become an encyclopedia of knowledge.
Professor Wright of Harvard University was so deeply impressed by
his erudite scholarship that he insisted that Swamiji should
represent Hinduism at the Parliament of Religions, Chicago.
On hearing from Swami that he was denied that opportunity since he
could not produce the required credentials, the professor himself
introduced Vivekananda to the organizing committee in glowing
words.” Here is a man who is more learned than all our learned
professors put together. Asking him for credentials is asking the sun
to state its right to shine!"
Concentration gave Narendranath knowledge, knowledge gave him
confidence finally leading to success and made him the world
conqueror Swami Vivekanananda.
"Concentration is the essence of all knowledge; nothing can be done
without it. Ninety percent of thought force is wasted by the ordinary
human being, and therefore he is constantly committing blunders; the
trained man or mind never makes a mistake."
Swami Vivekananada.

12) Strength:
Life is not always smooth like a bed of roses. Happiness and misery
are two sides of the same coin. One needs to develop mental strength
to digest them. Many a time a weak mind that is unable to withstand
suffering invites only untold miseries. What happened to
Dronacharya, when he heard the news of his son Ashvatthama's
death? He lost confidence on account of grief and finally lost his
life.Anger, grief, hatred, jealousy, ego, fear, inferiority complex are
obstacles which make a person weak and bereft of confidence. But
there are people who maintain equanimity even in the midst of crisis.
When Sardar Patel was arguing his case in court he received a
telegram carrying the news of his wife's death. He was not perturbed
by this and continued to argue till the end of the day, won the case in
favour of his client and then broke the news of his wife's death. That
is the sign of a healthy mind. Such people never lose their selfconfidence
even in the midst of a crisis.
Is anyone free from problems in this world? Without struggle, there
is no meaning for life. We have come to this world only to conquer
difficulties. Today, our youth are becoming so sensitive that for
petty things they feel depressed and commit suicide. Success and
failure are inevitable in life. Such a rare human birth is not meant for
committing suicide. We have no right to destroy this body. It is a
precious gift of god given to us to make the best use of it to achieve
great things. Failures in examinations, a little scolding from parents, a
petty quarrel with friends, a temporary financial problem, failure in
love affairs, inferiority complex, unemployment, dowry harassment,
these are the common reasons which forces people to commit suicide.
It is a great sin to commit suicide. It is not less terrible than
committing murder. We are not the owner of this body, we are only
the keeper. Therefore, we have no right to destroy it.
For every problem there is a solution: we need only a little patience
and confidence. Let us develop mental strength and courage to face
the problems of life and they will disappear in no time.
All the powers in the universe are already ours. It is we who have put
our hands before our eyes and cry that it is dark. Know that there is
no darkness around us. Take the hands away and there is the light
which was from the beginning. Darkness never existed, weakness
never existed. We who are fools cry that we are weak; we who are
fools cry that we are impure. Thus Vedanta only insists that the ideal
is practical, but that it has been so all the time; and this ideal, this
reality, is our own nature. Everything else that you see is false,
untrue. As soon as you say,” I am a little mortal being," you are saying
something which is not true, you are giving the lie to yourselves, you
are hypnotizing yourselves into something vile and weak and wretched.
Swami Vivekanananda.

"Meditation is very simple", said by Ramakrishna Paramhansa Dev

"When Swami Ramakrishna Paramhansa was living in ruins with his disciples (including Swami Vivekananda), they went on a strict meditation regime. Every morning, they used to wake up well before sunrise and used to meditate, then breakfast and meditation, lunch and meditation, dinner and sleep. It was an attempt to gain Moksha (liberation, not exactly the correct translation but still...) at its extreme.

One day, one of the disciples came and told Swami Ramakrishna that he is having trouble meditating because of a siren blaring nearby everyday. Swami told him, god is everywhere. Meditate on the siren itself. And the problem was solved."

It doesn't matter what you chant, how you count and what you do. As long as your mind is clear of everything except one thought , and you are able to go beyond the sensation of your own physical body and thus the physical world, you are meditating.

Power of Chanting "Om Namah Shivaya"

Baijnath Mahadev: The only Hindu temple built by an English couple in India – Sangram K. Parhi
The British ruled India for hundreds of years, and built many churches and cathedrals. But in the 1880s, a Shiva temple in Agar Malwa, Madhya Pradesh, was rebuilt by Lt. Col. Martin — the only temple ever made by an Englishman in India.
Col. Martin was in the Afghan wars. He used to regularly write to his wife, informing her of conditions there. It was a long war, and gradually the colonel’s letters stopped. Mrs. Martin, who then lived in the cantonment of Agar Malwa, was besides herself with grief, fearing the worst.
She would spend time riding for hours to calm herself. One day she rode her horse, past the temple of Baijnath Mahadev. It was in a decrepit state. It was the time of arti, and the sound of conches and the chanting of mantras compelled her to stop. She went inside to see the worship of Lord Shiva taking place. The priests saw the grief on her face and asked her what was wrong. Mrs. Martin narrated her sad story. The Brahmins told her that Lord Shiva listens to sincere prayers of all devotees and saves them from difficult situations. She was advised by one of the priests to start chanting the mantra: Baidyanath Mahadev Temple, Agar Malwa, M.P.“Om Namah Shivaya” for 11 days. The Englishwoman prayed to Lord Shiva for the colonel’s safe return, promising she would rebuild the temple if he came home safe from the war. On the 10th day, a messenger arrived from Afghanistan with a letter from her husband. It read, “I was regularly sending you letters from the battlefield but then suddenly the Pathans surrounded us. I thought there was no way of escape. Suddenly I saw an Indian yogi with long hair, wearing a tiger skin carrying a trident. He had an awe-inspiring personality and he started wielding his weapon against the Afghans who ran away from the field in fright. With his grace what was certain death our bad times turned into victory. Then the great yogi told me that I should not worry and that he had come to rescue me because he was very pleased with my wife’s prayers.”
Tears of joy and gratitude welled up in Mrs. Martin’s eyes as she read the letter. Her heart was overwhelmed. She fell at the feet of Lord Shiva’s image and sobbed. After a few weeks Lt. Col. Martin returned and his wife told him her story. The couple became devotees of Lord Shiva. In 1883, they donated Rs 15,000 to renovate the temple. This information is engraved on a slab kept in the Baijnath Mahadev Temple.
The Martins sailed for England with the firm resolution that they would make a Shiva temple at their home and pray to him till the end of life. And they did. – The New Indian Express, Chennai, Jan. 8, 2012

Why Chant Om Namah Shivay?

Why Chant Om Namah Shivay?

Shiva is also called Bhootnath, the master of the panch mahabhutas, the 5 elements that constitute the universe and the human body; earth, water, fire, air & space element. Thats why the material world is called pra-panch. Honoring the elements is the true worship of Bhootnath. In today's age, people are more concerned about the environment. Being sensitive and responsible towards the environment ...has been our ancient tradition. If we look closely at the Vedic tradition, we respect mother earth; before digging, we do pooja; the rivers and mountains are considered sacred...
In pooja, all the 5 elements are used. Aarti (fire with camphor), flowers, water, incense etc all are offered. Awakening these 5 elements inside us is in reality, awakening the shiva-principle in us; the real Shiva puja.
Na Ma Shi Va Ya: These 5 syllables represent the 5 Elements; earth, water, fire, air & Space which in turn are connected to the 5 senses; smell, taste, sight, touch & sound respectively.
Shiva is also said to be the overlord of the 9 planets. As the 9 planets move through the 12 sun signs, it creates 9x12 = 108 effects on the body-mind-conciousness. Chanting the MahaMantra Om Namah Shivaya 108 times daily nullifies the negative influences and enhances the positive. Also any ill-effects of the senses are quashed & well-being is restored. So good health & good luck is ensured

Why do we do Om Namah Shivaya chanting? And why we do it 108 times?

Why do we do Om Namah Shivaya chanting? And why we do it 108 times?

Namah, read backwards is manah, the mind which is directed outwards and confused, dull, etc. you turn the mind inwards, it becomes Namah, and when you go inwards, what do you find? Shiva! The embodiment of Bliss, peace and tranquility... So we chant the Om Namah Shivaya to turn ourselves inwards to the Bliss and tranquility of the Being.

Other than this there are 3 more reasons:

1. Like we take a bath everyday (hopefully ), and that cleans our physical body, we need to take a “mantrasnaan”, a bath with mantras, this rejuvenates and cleanses our subtle body.

2. There are 12 zodiac signs and 9 planets. As the 9 planets move through the 12 signs, their positions affect us either negatively or positively. Chanting the Om Namah Shivaya 108 times (12 x 9 = 108 duh!), nullifies any negative effects and enhances positive effects of the planets on us! You will suddenly find yourself becoming very lucky and notice that things that were troubling you will simply vanish

3. Chanting Om Namah Shivaya is sooooooo nice!!!

Make this a part of your Sadhana everyday. It doesn’t take more than about 10 minutes or so... and you will really feel very nice

Happy Chanting

What are the benefits of prayer?

What are the benefits of prayer?

1.) Enhances the potency of chanting the Name of God: A seeker chants the Name of God with the aim of realising God. Only if accompanied by intense motivation for God realisation and spiritual emotion will the Name repeated (chanted) be truly effective. Repeated prayers about being graced with quality chanting, along with chanting the Name of God, helps in generation of spiritual emotion and makes our chanting reach God.

2.) Divine help in spiritual practice: When a seeker sincerely prays to God to get a particular action/thought/attitude pertaining to his spiritual practice, done through him (the seeker), a seemingly impossible task is easily accomplished by the Guru’s grace.

3.) Reducing the ego: While praying we plead before God; it is therefore the place where pride is abandoned and we humbly admit our need/human frailty as well as our dependence upon God. It therefore helps to reduce the ego faster. Refer to importance of prayer.

4.) Increase in faith: When a prayer gets answered, faith in God or the Guru increases. Faith is the only currency on our spiritual journey.

Food for life

Food is a basic necessity of life, and provides nourishment and energy for us to sustain in daily life. We are well aware of the nutritive properties of food as they are extensively researched. The psychological satisfaction of eating something we like is also known to us through personal experience. However there have been comparatively few studies about the effects of a common practice – that of making a prayer before meals.

In our fast paced lifestyle, for some of us, a prayer may seem like a redundant step in our meal routine for which we have little time or patience. For others, it may be an altogether unknown experience. To understand the effects of prayers before meals from a spiritual perspective, we conducted spiritual research using advanced sixth sense and compared what happens when we make a prayer before meals to what happens when food is eaten without praying beforehand. Have you all tried praying before meals and if so, did you notice any benefit???

Make your life through Meditation

Make your life through Meditation:

The breath is so important in meditation and is THE way to anchor the mind. When you sit down to meditate, always begin by focusing on your breath...
Inhale deeply - allowing yourself to feel the air as you pull it in...

Feel your chest expand, and let your stomach expand as well...

Allow the fullness of the breath completely expand in your body.
Hold for a couple of seconds, then exhale...

Again, concentrate on the sensations in your body as you slowly release your breath. Repeat 3-5 times and you are ready for your meditation!

Why we progress faster when we chant with faith?

Why we progress faster when we chant with faith?

The reason this happens is because when we chant with faith, we feel God’s presence more. This means an increase in our spiritual emotion (bhav), which is our ability to feel His presence all around us. This feeling of His presence reduces our focus on ourselves and therefore reduces our ego. Because of our reduced ego, we are better able to access the Divine Energy of the Deity (aspect of God) whose Name we chant. This helps result in spiritual progress.

Guideline for Meditation

Guideline for Meditation:

#. First, the practice of meditation has to proceed with some one object before the mind. I used to concentrate my mind on some black point. Ultimately during those days, I could not see the point any more, nor notice that the point was before me at all -- the mind used to be no more -- no wave of functioning would arise, as if it were all an ocean without any breath of air. In that state I used to experience glimpses of supersensuous truth.

#. ...it is true that the mind very easily attains calmness when one practises meditation with anything on which one's mind is most apt to settle down. This is the reason why we have in this country so much worship of the images of gods and goddesses. And what wonderful art developed from such worship!...

#. ...the fact however is that the objects of meditation can never be the same in the case of all men. People have proclaimed and preached to others only those external objects to which they held on to become perfected in meditation. Oblivious of the fact, later on, that these objects were aids to the attainment of perfect mental calmness, men have extolled them beyond everything else.

#. You must keep the mind fixed on one object, like an unbroken stream of oil. The ordinary man's mind is scattered on different objcts, and at the time of meditation, too, the mind is at first apt to wander. But let any desire whatever arise in the mind, you must sit calmly and watch what sort of ideas are coming. By continuing to watch in that way, the mind becomes calm, and there are no thought waves in it. These waves represent the thought-activity of the mind. Those things that you have thought too deeply, have transformed themselves into a subconscious current, and therefore these come up in the mind in meditation. The rise of these waves, or thoughts, during meditation is an evidence that your mind is tending towards concentration. Sometimes the mind is concentrated on a set of ideas -- this is called meditation with Vikalpa or oscillation. But when the mind becomes almost free from all activities, it melts in the inner Self, which is the essence of infinite Knowledge, One and Itself Its own support.
#. Think and meditate that you are the omnipresent Atman. "I am neither the body, nor the mind, nor the Buddhi (determining faculty), neither the gross nor the subtle body," -- by this process of elimination, immerse your mind in the transcendant knowledge which is your real nature. Kill the mind by thus plunging it repeatedly in this. Then only you will realise the Essence of Inelligence, or be established in your real nature. Knower and known, meditator and object meditated upon, will then become one, and the cessation of all phenomenal superimpositions will follow....There is no relative or conditioned knowledge in this state. When the Atman is the only knower, by what means can you possibly know it? The Atman is knowledge, the Atman is Intelligence, the Atman is Sachchidanand.

How do I give more love to myself?

How do I give more love to myself?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: You want to give more love to yourself, IMPOSSIBLE. If an ocean says how can I give more water to myself, what can be said? If sugarcane says how can I give more sweetness to myself, what would you say? It is like sun saying how can it give more light to itself? It is impossible for you to give more love to yourself.

In fact you love yourself too much, and that is the problem, you’re only thinking about yourself. Start thinking about everybody else, and give love to others. You are ‘love’ my dear, just relax and reduce your wants. Your wants and your desires are eating you up; you simply relax.
You should have wants. There is no problem if you have your desires, but don’t let the desires have you. I don’t mind you having desires at the initial stages. Later you find, before the desire arises in you, it gets fulfilled.

Om Namah Shivaya mantra Chanting

40 day practice:

The period of 40 days has been widely recognized as an auspicious period both in the East and the West since ancient times. A traditional way to do an extended practice of Om Namah Shivaya mantra is to choose a number of repetitions per day, and to do that for 40 days. The mind likes to have a beginning and end to a practice, a sense of completion, such as comes with a 40 day (or longer) practice.

Fixed time per practice session: Mind finds comfort in knowing that it will do the practice of one round of 108 repetitions (or some other number of rounds), and that each round will take a predictable amount of time.

Same number of rounds: Mind also likes the predictability of doing a certain number of rounds done per day. Mind may resist at times, but once it gets started in the practice, mind likes the habit.

Specific number of days: Mind also likes the plan of knowing how many days or months a practice will take to complete. This can be very beneficial in stabilizing a noisy mind, which is a common complaint.

A mala is a set of counting beads with 108 beads. Only 100 are counted, with the other 8 considered an offering to the divine, however you personally hold that. You might choose to do 1, 2, 3, 4, or more rounds of 108 mantras per day, counting with a set of mala beads.

It has been said that there is freedom in discipline; choosing to do a regular practice frees the mind from wondering what practice will be done that day. It is also important not to do the mantra practice with rote repetition, but rather, with feeling and awareness.

By running your own experiment for 40 days, you can decide for yourself whether or not the practice of Om Namah Shivaya mantra is beneficial.

Vedic mantras:

Vedic mantras:

Veda is from the Sanskrit root Vid (to know).
Veda is a body of knowledge covering all aspects of life and creation. It is one body of
knowledge, but as it was too vast for the sake of convenience a great rishi Veda Vyasa
divided it into four parts and gave them four names. He was called Veda Vyasa because
he divided the Veda.
The four Veda’s are Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharvana Veda.
Each Veda again is divided into four parts called
1. mantra bhâga
2. brahmana bhâga
3. âranyaka bhâga
4. upanishad or Vedanta.
Bhâga means a part. ( â indicates a pronunciation of elongation of a, like a in ‘are’).
All the verses in the mantra bhâga are also called mantras only.
All Vedic Mantras are having intonations for pronunciation and it is very important for
them. Correct pronunciation of words is essential. Intonation is over and above this
condition.
There are various important mantras from the Veda’s, like
gayatri mantra
maha mrutyunjaya mantra
panchakshari mantra
ashtakshari mantra etc.
There are many Shanti Mantras for individual as well as universal peace and happiness.
Vedic mantras are mainly used in Vedic fire rituals called yajñyâs and yâgâs. Every
mantra has a particular place in the ritual and is to be associated with a particular
procedure to offer oblations in the fire. Nowadays, since these rituals became rare,
individuals are using these mantras mainly for chanting to promote individual and
universal peace.
8
In general all these mantras for peace are ended with uttering of the word Shanti (Peace)
three times.
Shanti or Peace can be disturbed by various reasons. These reasons can be categorized
into three groups viz. âdhi davika tâpa, âdhi bhautica tâpa, dâhyatmika tâpa.
·  The first one is the tâpa or afflictions born due to natural calamities etc. like foods,
earthquakes, cyclones, tornado’s etc. on which the human being has very less
control.
·  The second one is afflictions like strikes, wars, battles, insect bites, epidemics and
so on.
·  The third type of afflictions is due to the individual alone, from one’s own body and
mind.
In fact all types of afflictions can fully be covered under these three categories. In order
to ward off these three types of afflictions these mantras are used with a prayer to the
Universal Intelligence.

Om namah Shivaya & the chakras

Om Namah Shivaya is an ancient mantra used to awaken higher states of consciousness. The literal translation of these Sanskrit words means "I Bow To Shiva".

The following notes are offered as suggestions to help you get the most out of japa, mantra repetition. They are extracted from teaching sessions given by Mark Griffin.

The value of your mantra repetition is proportionate to the attention you give to it as you do it. If you engage in mindless dry repetition, you will see far less benefit from this practice than its full potential holds. On the other hand, if you give rise to the internal feeling of bodhicitta, which is the yearning for enlightenment and Truth, and tune in to the silence of the Inner Self as you say the mantra, you will obtain tremendous results from doing japa. Your practice will be enhanced if you are also aware of the placement and color of each syllable as you recite them. It is not important how fast or slow you repeat the mantra. It is intention that makes all the difference.

The mantra Om Namah Shivaya can be analyzed according to the elements, chakras and colors:

OM arises at the sixth chakra, and is associated with the mind. The mind has no element. It is essentially a formless vortex of light.

NA arises at the root chakra at the base of the spine and is associated with the element of Earth and is yellow in color.

MA arises at the second chakra and is associated with the element of water and is green in color.

SHI arises at the third chakra at the navel and is associated with the element of fire and is red in color.

VA arises at the fourth chakra at the heart and is associated with the element of air and is white in color.

YA arises at the fifth chakra at the throat and is associated with the element of ether and is blue in color.
As you repeat the mantra, be aware of the placement of the syllables. Focus on NA at the root, MA at the second seat, SHI at the navel, VA at the heart and YA at the throat.

At the same time, be aware of their corresponding colors: yellow, green, red, white, and blue. The colors are not arbitrary, randomly selected or based on a feeling. Each element has as its basis a subtle atom. When you meditate very subtly, they appear to you as a scintillating atom. The atom sparkles with a shining yellow light at the root chakra. At the second chakra, you can see a brilliant green atom. At the third chakra, the fire element, the atom is a bright fire-engine orange-red. At the heart it is white like a sparkling star. At the throat the atom is blue. Remember, the elements have an intrinsic color – it's not something invented.

As you do more japa, your attention will become more encompassing. You have to learn to think about many things at once: the sound of the vibration, the color and reaching within to feel for the heart-mind space of the bodhicitta – the essence of enlightenment already present within you. With practice, you'll be able to learn to do it with one sweep of attention.

It’s like speed reading, where you learn to see the whole paragraph at once. It’s an exercise or skill that you develop. There is a muscle of simultaneous consciousness in the mind. Don’t be concerned by the effort it takes; just keep practicing and you will make steady progress. This is how to get the most from your japa: at the same time you are repeating the mantra you also strive to feel the intuitive, multi-layered, universal side of things. Experiment with it and enjoy the discovery.

There is a value to the constant repetition of mantra yoga because you can get in the flow of it and start taking intuitive leaps. It's not something static that you bring a work ethic to because you get x-amount of credit for each mantra. The value comes from connecting the mantra to the Self. The more you can do that, the more powerful each mantra will be.

Once you get that flow of attention hooked up, it's like you’re sitting on top of a fountain of energy and bliss that will never quit. Then the mantra does itself. You don’t do the mantra – the mantra does you.

One of the things that happens when you do a practice like this is that you’re resonating each of the elements and saturating them with the light of pure consciousness That in turn accelerates the purification of elements, which speeds up spiritual unfoldment. When you get all the chakras heated up and vibrating into each other through the attention you place in your mantra repetition, you get a thousand-fold response: once you get the mantra really cooking inside the system, what would have taken you a thousand days to do, you can do in one repetition of the mantra.

This kind of practice should be a constant companion because you are reaching with your attention and your higher will and blending that with the divine will. You are threading the vibration of the Self down into the more densely populated bodies of the physical body, the subtle physical body and the causal body, and infusing them with the vibration of pure consciousness. In that way, you are displacing the karmic content of the elements, so this becomes a very profound practice of clearing obstacles. Each repetition of the mantra is like a vehicle that is carrying one bucket load of the light of the Self and placing it in the elemental seat in each chakra.

It may seem like this would take a long time, but after a while that light of the Self begins to really build up, and soon you have an enormous amount of pure consciousness vibrating in each chakra.

It is a tremendously purifying energy. Once the chakras are completely purified, the true seats of the elements are revealed as nectars at the crown of the head. They exist in ecstatic equilibrium and become limitless.

Many people find it harder to connect with the three lower chakras. Mark explains about that in this way:

"The bottom three chakras are harder to focus on, and that is because your connection to them is subconscious and unconscious. They are more like the power turbines of the chakra system. All of the chakras have enormous energy but the lower chakras are like raw power, while the higher three chakras vibrate at the frequency of the ecstatic equilibrium.

That’s another reason why this practice of japa is valuable. It brings the vibration of the highest light into the root chakra, at the level of earth, which is what you’re really after. Instead of having all of these separate energies, they all become infused and integrated with the frequency of the Self. If you do each repetition of the mantra with feeling, giving rise to love and bodhicitta, the love of enlightenment, you'll be able to draw down the light of the Self, the infinite consciousness, and flood each of the chakras and the elements."

(This is known as “Om Namah Shivaya Mantra”. It helps in early fulfillment of all desires of life. It resides in the category of Great Mantras in the Hindu Mythology. The use of a beaded garland of 108 beads, chanting three times a day (Morning, Noon and Evening) is favorable.)

If you are meditating in silence deeply, you can hear the sound OM within. The whole creation emerged from the sound OM. It is the primordial sound or the Universal sound by which the whole universe vibrates. OM also means inviting the higher energy. This divine sound has the power to create, sustain and destroy, giving life and movement to all that exist.

|| NAMAH||

NAMAH means, saluting, worshipping, respecting to the diety.

|| SHIVAYA||

SHIVAYA means, one of the most complex gods of India, embodying seemingly contradictory qualities. He is the destroyer and the restorer, the great ascetic and the symbol of sensuality, the benevolent herdsman of souls and the wrathful avenger. Shiva was originally known as Rudra, a minor deity addressed only three times in the Rig Veda.
