Why Chant Om Namah Shivay?

Why Chant Om Namah Shivay?

Shiva is also called Bhootnath, the master of the panch mahabhutas, the 5 elements that constitute the universe and the human body; earth, water, fire, air & space element. Thats why the material world is called pra-panch. Honoring the elements is the true worship of Bhootnath. In today's age, people are more concerned about the environment. Being sensitive and responsible towards the environment ...has been our ancient tradition. If we look closely at the Vedic tradition, we respect mother earth; before digging, we do pooja; the rivers and mountains are considered sacred...
In pooja, all the 5 elements are used. Aarti (fire with camphor), flowers, water, incense etc all are offered. Awakening these 5 elements inside us is in reality, awakening the shiva-principle in us; the real Shiva puja.
Na Ma Shi Va Ya: These 5 syllables represent the 5 Elements; earth, water, fire, air & Space which in turn are connected to the 5 senses; smell, taste, sight, touch & sound respectively.
Shiva is also said to be the overlord of the 9 planets. As the 9 planets move through the 12 sun signs, it creates 9x12 = 108 effects on the body-mind-conciousness. Chanting the MahaMantra Om Namah Shivaya 108 times daily nullifies the negative influences and enhances the positive. Also any ill-effects of the senses are quashed & well-being is restored. So good health & good luck is ensured
