"Meditation is very simple", said by Ramakrishna Paramhansa Dev

"When Swami Ramakrishna Paramhansa was living in ruins with his disciples (including Swami Vivekananda), they went on a strict meditation regime. Every morning, they used to wake up well before sunrise and used to meditate, then breakfast and meditation, lunch and meditation, dinner and sleep. It was an attempt to gain Moksha (liberation, not exactly the correct translation but still...) at its extreme.

One day, one of the disciples came and told Swami Ramakrishna that he is having trouble meditating because of a siren blaring nearby everyday. Swami told him, god is everywhere. Meditate on the siren itself. And the problem was solved."

It doesn't matter what you chant, how you count and what you do. As long as your mind is clear of everything except one thought , and you are able to go beyond the sensation of your own physical body and thus the physical world, you are meditating.
